Why Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes?

These days, I think it's becoming more important for the average person to think about taking probiotics and digestive enzymes. In our modern day and age, foods are becoming less and less nutritious, meaning that fewer of the nutrients the body needs are present in them. Foods are full of fillers like maltodextrin and simple carbohydrates, and lacking in real substance. This is the reason why a lot of people have begun taking multivitamin pills, to make up for the lack found in the diet. But this can present a larger problem in that over the course of time, the digestive system can grow lazy due to the lack of nutritional value in common foods, and the ease of digestion of the simple carbohydrates and fillers. This is especially true for people who eat a lot of junk food.

Issues With Cravings

Many people who try and eat a healthier diet find that their body beings to crave the junk food that they originally were eating. This is largely due to the fact that the body prefers to digest foods that provide simple sugars and energy. It doesn't have to work as hard to get lots of energy. The body doesn't really understand the bigger picture that you're running near deficiencies in some key vitamins and minerals. It only knows that those other foods you used to eat were easy to digest and provided a lot of energy for use and storage. So switching to a healthier diet can sometimes be very difficult.

Where Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes Come In

This is where probiotics and digestive enzymes can come in handy. When you're trying to switch over to a healthier diet, you can help give the body a helping hand by taking probiotics and digestive enzymes with your meals. This will assist the body in breaking down the complex nutrients so that you get more from the food you're eating, and should help to stave off some of the cravings for junk food and other easy to digest foods. And as you begin to eat a healthier diet, your body will naturally begin to produce more of its own digestive enzymes. The digestive system will eventually get out of its lazy routine, and hopefully will begin to absorb more nutrients from less amounts of food. This can really give you a boost to your dieting efforts because you won't need to consume as much food for the same nutritional value.

Where to Find Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes

There are a few different way to add probiotics and digestive enzymes into your diet. For probiotics, instead of buying supplements, you can find probiotics in a lot of organic dairy products like yogurt and cottage cheese. Some companies are now beginning to add probiotics or preserve the probiotic content in their dairy products. Greek yogurt is a great example of this. For digestive enzymes, fruit is often loaded with great enzymes. Certain fruits, papaya especially, is loaded with digestive enzymes. If you eat fruit with high digestive enzyme content with your meals, it can help your body to break down the other food. Here are some fruit and vegetables that are high in digestive enzymes:

  • Papaya
  • Pineapple
  • Asparagus
  • Kiwi

Another interesting source that contains both protiotics and digestive enzymes are green powder formulas. Green powder formulas that mix up vegetables, fruit, algae, grasses, and herbal extracts also often come with various digestive enzymes and probiotic cultures. So you're not only getting a huge wealth of vitamins and minerals, but you're also getting your probiotics and digestive enzymes as well. That's the form that I prefer to take them in. You get the most bang for your buck. For reviews on all the major green powder formulas, go to:

Yeah, that's not the best reaction for your stomach. If you were to mix milk and pineapple in a cup, the milk would curdle and it wouldn't taste very nice. So if you eat them pretty close to the same time, it might cause a bit of nausea and uneasiness. It would be best if you could spread them out by 30 minutes or so.

Interesting that our digestive system is like the rest of us always wants the easy way.

Interesting read. I do enjoy the yogurt and cottage cheese.

Probiotics are really important to keep around! If you go on antibiotics, it kills both the good and bad stuff, including intestinal flora. I always take probiotics when on antibiotics. I really should take it more often!
