Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium glycinate is a fairly new supplement on the shelves that most people have probably never heard of. Magnesium has been around in supplement form for a long time now, as citrate or oxide, but only recently has magnesium glycinate appeared on the scene. Magnesium in general is one of those essential metals like iron, and I was surprised to discover that studies are beginning to show that a large percentage of the population has an unknown magnesium deficiency. The reason why they don't know they have it is often attributed to the generalized symptoms that come with a magnesium deficiency, things like irritability, muscle cramps, insomnia, spasms, and poor digestion. Some of the symptoms are more specific and serious however, like seizures and need to be taken care of immediately.

Magnesium glycinate is gaining recognition as a more effective supplement than its magnesium counterparts. The reason why this form of magnesium supplement is very effective is because magnesium glycinate is a combination of an essential amino acid and magnesium. Glycine is an amino acid, and when bonded with magnesium, creates magnesium glycinate, which the body very easily absorbs. Other magnesium supplements can be difficult to absorb, and because of that, often cause problems like diarrhea or constipation. Magnesium glycinate is much more bio-available than its counterpart magnesium supplements.

Functions of Magnesium in the Human Body

Magnesium is absolutely essential to the body. Are you aware that magnesium is involved in over 300 different chemical reactions inside the body? Here are a few of the more important functions of magnesium:

1. Magnesium is involved in healthy teeth and bones. This is because magnesium helps to regulate the absorption of calcium, but is also involved in proper bone construction. Many bones are built "improperly" by the body because of magnesium deficiency and end up brittle. Needless to say, magnesium deficiency has been linked to things like osteoporosis. So magnesium glycinate is definitely a bone healthy supplement.

2. Magnesium concentrations in the body are almost 20 times higher in the heart than in the bloodstream. That should tell you something important. I said earlier that one of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency was muscle spasms. Since the heart is essentially a muscle, a magnesium deficiency there can bring about the onset of coronary spasms. So magnesium gycinate is definitely a heart healthy supplement.

3. Magnesium is also a natural relaxer. It has a therapeutic effect on many different areas of the body. Those of you who have ever taken a magnesium supplement know what this feels like. I've taken it before to help me fall asleep, and it definitely does the trick. Not only that, but one of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency mentioned above is insomnia, so taking magnesium glycinate to help correct sleeplessness might be a good idea.

4. Magnesium is also essential to the formation of proteins. If you've read any of my other articles, you know how big a deal protein is inside the body. According to one source that I often quote, each of your cells is producing 2,000 proteins every second. That's right, every second. Sounds impossible. But in order for proteins to be produced, magnesium must be present.

Natural Magnesium Sources

There are many foods that have magnesium in them. Here are a few:

  • Nuts like Cashews, Almonds, and Many More
  • Soybeans
  • Corn
  • Peas
  • Wheat
  • Leafy Green Vegetables
  • Other Vegetables Such as Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts
  • Many Fruits, such as Lemons, Peaches, Bananas, Apples, Blueberries and More
  • Green powder formulas rich in vegetables, grasses, and algae

I've been taking this off/on for over a year! It has relieved constipation, overall body pain levels associated with 'aging', and has assisted me in getting a better nights sleep!

Good Info, not so much for patients or consumers on the web. I was lucky or it was fate when I found my amazing doctor in Southampton, NY. Dr. Nuno simply mentioned kindly that I may be lacking Magnesium and that glycinate was the proper form, not carbonate, hydroxide, etc. At the time with ADHD, migraines, insomnia, elevated white blood cell count, pernicious anemia (told to be passed on from my mother's side) which required monthly injections, severe TMJ requiring a bite guard so I could not saw my teeth away at night, and swollen lymph nodes that were scaring me to death all over my neck and chest from over active adrenal glands. Sound like a gem...I know. the list goes on sadly. Yet, Dr. Nuno did not know of each and every one of these he knew of the core and of my pain. He is in tune with my body and knowing the ability in which it can heal without medication. He has changed my life. In a week, I believe in him and myself so much that the Adderall is gone for my ADHD, I am sleeping like a baby at night and I have found that calm place that I once knew. I have not needed my B12 shot that I rely on to make it through the month (usually my legs cramp to tell me it is time for my 1.5cc shot) and I am well past due. I am on a small dose of Magnesium glycinate now and the difference in my body and mind are remarkdable. Reading the symptoms for someone with a Magnesium deficiency were like reading symptoms that I would write for my own doctor..down to burning and redness of the earlobe...This was such a gift. Thank you to my very own, special doctor. And thank you to you for getting the word out. I know I will be telling everyone I know that will listen! Love and Peace, Dee Dee

how long does it take for results once started for sleep problems?

Benjimester Hub Author 12 months ago

It depends on the person. If you're wanting to take magnesium for sleep problems then you might want to consider a magnesium fizz supplement that you put in hot water. Those are usually more soothing for sleep problems and very fast acting.

Our pharmacy is a big promoter of this product, as we find in invaluable for a lot of our patients. We are a manufacturing pharmacy with locations in two major hospitals, and as such have a more avid interest in products such as these. Until recently we have manufactured our own Mag/glycinate but have now found a reliable product that we are selling. Kudos to you for spreading the word about this!!

My heart went into arrhythmia and the ER dr said my magnesium level was extremely low, even tho I had just taken 2 tablets 2 hours b/4. I never paid attention to what kind of magnesium I took, I thought they were all the same. I have since been on a search for the perfect magnesium for me and just bought my first bottle of Mag/Glinate and after reading this information, I feel confident that this will help.

Thank you for the informative website, I really needed it !!

Arrhythmia can be scary, especially when you're not used to having it. I really hope the magnesium helps. It'll hopefully help to balance your electrolytes, which can be a major factor in arrhythmia. Magnesium is kind of a cure all for a lot of different things. Magnesium can really help people with reactive hypoglycemia, and a lot of other difficult to diagnose conditions.

Are all mg glycinate supplements the same with regard to quality? There seems to be a lot of price difference between some brands and I wonder if some are better than others, e.g. re absorption, fillers, manufacturing process, etc.

Benjimester profile image

Benjimester Hub Author 8 months ago

You know, I've not tried all of them, but there usually is a difference between supplements in terms of absorption and fillers. I always go with Source Naturals for any supplements I buy, so I don't really know a whole lot about the other brands these days.

I would like to know if you can get too much Magnesium Glycinate? I am a true vegetarian (no meat, but I eat soy products and have a very balanced diet of vegetables, nuts, grains, fruit, etc. I don't want to waste my money if I don't need the product. Thanks!

Benjimester profile image

Benjimester Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey Linda. You're smart to not want to spend your money on things you don't really need. It's hard to get too much magnesium, since your body uses it in so many different processes. As a vegetarian, you probably get enough magnesium I would think. Leafy vegetables and nuts are usually good sources of magnesium, so you're probably doing okay I would think. The good thing about magnesium glycinate though is that it's super cheap. So if you buy it and don't really need it, at least it's not a huge waste of money.

I took my first dose of Mag Glycinate last night -- so far so good. It definitely helped me fall asleep quickly. Starting with one per day at bedtime, to slowly build to a max of 3/day.

I recently started taking Magnesium Glycinate and Taurine, and have noticed that I have stopped "ruminating" about a romantic break-up. I am not sure if I am simply getting over him, or if it is the magnesium glycinate and taurine that is helping, as I am not over-analyzing conversations, emails, etc. regarding my ex, as I had been doing for many months. Can magnesium help with rumination? In addition, should taurine be taken with magnesium glycinate for depression? If so, how much of the magnesium glycinate and how much taurine? Thanks for any info.

Benjimester profile image

Benjimester Hub Author 4 months ago

Leegh, that's an interesting connection. I suppose that since magnesium is a relaxing agent that many people use to help treat anxiety that it very well could be what's helping with your break-up and rumination. Magnesium has a really calming effect on the body, and has even been used to help stop seizures when they flare up. So I could definitely believe that it's having those types of positive benefits.

I've not done a whole lot of research on taurine unfortunately. From what I've read, I don't think it's as effective an amino acid as L-Tryptophan and L-Tyrosine. L-Tryptophan and L-Tyrosine are precursors to serotonin and dopamine, and the body can directly use them to create higher levels of positive brain chemicals and can really help with depression. You might try taking a supplement that has both of those amino acids. Also, if while looking at different supplements, you see the compound 5-HTP instead of L-Tryptophan, they're the same thing. 5-HTP stands for 5-hydroxy-tryptophan and you might run across it while looking at different supplements. Any amino acid should be safe to take with magnesium since amino acids are the building blocks of life and are already heavily present within the body and magnesium is used by 350 different bodily processes. So amino acids and magnesium heavily interact already. I can't tell you specifically how much you can take since I'm not a qualified medical practitioner and I can get into trouble for giving any kind of specific advice :( But I hope that information helps.
