How to Stop Food Cravings
84What Causes Food Cravings?
If you're trying to lost weight and don't know how to stop food cravings for those foods that really aren't healthy for you, then you first need to understand where these cravings are coming from. Most food cravings actually originate from having poor digestive function. You see, most junk food, fast food, and sodas are very simple, uncomplex foods high in sugars, starches and fillers, which are very easy to digest but have low nutritional value. They provide a high amount of caloric energy from easily digestible sources. So over time, if you eat a steady diet of these types of foods, your digestive system can grow lazy and produce less of a range of the enzymes needed for more complex foods.
So if you make a sudden change to your diet, like cutting out junk food and replacing it with food of higher nutritional value, your body will rebel cravings for simpler foods will ensue. Since your body has grown to enjoy the high caloric, easy to digest foods, and is no longer fully equipped to deal with nutrient dense foods, it won't immediately like the switch your making, and cravings will ensue. Depending on how big the changes are you've made, the cravings can either be intense and last for weeks, or relatively mild.
Tips for How to Stop Food Cravings
- Green Powder with Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes -- One of the best ways to get your stomach back to a place of peak digestive efficiency is to take a green powder that's full of nutrient dense foods, plus has an array of digestive enzymes and probiotics. This is like killing 3 birds with one stone. Not only are you giving your body a burst of nutrient dense foods that will trigger an almost immediate change in your digestion, you're also giving your digestive system the helping hand it needs by providing extra enzymes and beneficial bacteria that help your GI tract digest food. Thirdly, you're eliminating potential vitamin and mineral deficiencies that have been forming over the last few years due to your poor diet, which will boost your overall metabolism, which further promotes active digestive function. I take a green powder everyday. My favorite, and the one I take is Green Vibrance, which I've linked to just below. Not only does it have over 100 natural organic ingredients, it also contains half a dozen types of digestive enzymes and an impressive 25 billion cultures of probiotics per serving. That's enough to get anyone's digestive system back in gear.
- Water with Lemon -- Drinking water with a little bit of lemon is a surprisingly good way to stop a craving for sodas and other sweet drinks. Since lemon is highly acidic, it can help fool the body when it starts to crave sodas. Water by itself can actually help stop food cravings, but the effects are heightened with a little bit of fresh lemon. Lemon is full of pectin fiber, which is known to help fight hunger cravings and assist in weight loss. An additional bonus is that lemon helps to balance your pH, which is often in poor shape from a diet full of junk food. Balancing your pH will help to cut down on the amount of time your body craves junk food.
- Fresh Fruit -- Fresh fruit can often help deal with food cravings because fruit contains many simple sugars that the body can convert into immediate energy. If you're feeling a craving for sweets and you want to satisfy it, try eating a piece of your favorite fruit and see if that helps anything.
- Eat Small Meals More Often -- You've heard it before, but eating small nutrient dense meals more often can be one of the best things to help stop food cravings. Many people snack on junk food because they hungry during the long periods between meals. But if you cut down on those time periods and eat smaller portions more often, it should cut down on the cravings for junk foods.
- Wait the Craving Out -- Most cravings are short lived. Even though it's super difficult, if you don't have access to a healthy substitute for what you're craving, after 20 minutes or so, the food craving should pass.
