Dopamine Supplements

Dopamine supplements aren't like most traditional supplements. Normally, if you need vitamin C you take a vitamin C pill, or if you need selenium you take selenium. But if you need dopamine, you don't generally just take a dopamine supplement. Rather, most supplements that are branded as dopamine supplements are just a combination of things that help the body naturally produce and/or release more dopamine. In general, these supplements promote both dopamine and serotonin production and release. What exactly is dopamine? Dopamine is a neurotransmitter(a chemical messenger that allows nerve cells to talk to one another) involved in movement, attention, learning, and the brain’s pleasure and reward system. It's a pretty important chemical in the body. Serotonin is a similar neurotransmitter that's involved in things like sleep, depression, and memory. These two hormones must be finely balanced in order for a person to feel normal and happy, but easily they get thrown out of balance. Conditions like Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD) which comes from an underexposure to sunlight can cause serotonin and dopamine levels to be reduced.

Dopamine supplements like this one encourage the healthy regulation of hormones in the body.

What's in Dopamine Supplements?

Like we discussed in the above paragraph, most of the time, when you're in need of a hormone like dopamine or serotonin, you generally don't simply take them as supplements, but rather, you take a supplement which promotes the healthy natural production and release of dopamine and serotonin. Take the dopamine supplement to the right, an all around mood supporting supplement. This supplement promises to help deal with stress and anxiety with chemicals that have long been known to support brain function, like St Johns Wort and Ginseng Root Extract. It also contains a fatty acid, one which is helpful in the production of serotonin, dopamine, and other helpful chemicals. That's why it's considered a dopamine supplement, because it promotes the healthy and natural production of dopamine. Another popular dopamine supplement that I've left you a link for below is made up of an amino acid L-Tyrosine, which the body converts not only to dopamine, but other essential chemicals like Coenzyme Q10. We'll talk more about fatty acids and amino acids and their role on brain function in the next section.

Amino Acids, Fatty Acids, and Dopamine

Two key ingredients in many dopamine supplements are amino acids and fatty acids. The reason is because if you're deficient in either one of these two things, you'll very likely run the risk of chemical imbalances in the brain. Why is that? Let's take them one at a time. Amino acids have been called the building blocks of life. They're used everywhere in the body, and in nearly all of the chemicals your body produces, things like enzymes, proteins, and hormones. If you're deficient in amino acids, you'll definitely see it manifest itself in chemical deficiencies. Below, I've linked to a product that I love to use to make sure I'm getting enough amino acids. It's a cooking liquid that tastes very similar to soy sauce. It has 16 of the 20 essential amino acids, and is synthesized from soybeans, so it's safe for vegetarians. I put it in marinades, on salads, in dips, and other places.

Next, lets move onto fatty acids, more specifically Omega 3 fatty acids. Your brain is made up on fatty acids, or rather the working surface of your brain is. There are two things which are noteworthy to say about Omega 3 Fatty acids. The first is that the essential fatty acid DHA in Omega 3 fatty acids has been shown to help with the treatment of chronic depression. It assists heavily in positive brain function, and promotes the healthy regulation of chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. You need Omega 3 fatty acids in your diet. Which leads to the next point. Because of recent corporate farming methods where cattle are being grain fed instead of grass fed like in years past, cattle produce meat filled with Omega 6 fatty acids instead of Omega 3s. Nutritionists tell us that our diet should be an even 1:1 ratio between Omega 3s and Omega 6s. Nutritionists also tell us that people eating the Standard American Diet have a ratio between 10-20 times more Omega 6s than Omega 3s. The ratio has become 1:10, and in some cases 1:20. This has led to a widespread deficiency in the essential fatty acids that are needed for healthy brain function. You can guess what happens to your chemical and hormonal balance in the brain when this happens.

Excellent information on dopamine. You are such an expert. I think you should charge a fee for such expertise. :-) I am excluded, of course. :-) Thanks so much and keep writing these fantastic hubs. We need this type of information , especially from someone we trust. Voted a big thumbs up and awesome.

Very cool, I didn't know that about dopamine and ADHD. Thanks.

Informative post. I have heard of dopamine but never knew what it was for. Great product, I think a lot of people need that for mood swings and overall mental health.

Thanks Ryan! Yeah, sometimes you just need a little extra help from a natural supplement. Thanks very much for stopping by.

Hi! Haven't really understood dopamine well until now. Didn't realize it helps in maintaining chemical balances in the brain. Wonder whether it will help prevent Alzheimer in older age group.

Karen, that's a good question about Alzheimers. I'm not sure one way or another. Thanks for your comments!

I guess my Dopamine level increased while reading this article as I got excited and read it to the end :)

when we get excited, dopamine get released, I wonder how the reverse action impact on the control of our lives.

Right on :) I'm glad I could help stimulate dopamine release. I'm not sure how the reverse action works. I'm sure it has some effects but I couldn't say what. Thanks for stopping by!

Does dopamine supplements help for legs that moves all the time at bed time

I believe you're referring to Restless Leg Syndrome, and I don't think that Dopamine has any effect on that syndrome, but I can't say for sure.

Nice intro post on dopamine. I think the rise of supplements like dopamine illustrates the development of nootropics, supplements designed to enhance functions like memory, concentration and other cognitive functions. Whereas I'm still a bit skeptical about such smart drugs myself, they might be worth checking out.

Benjimester profile image

Benjimester Hub Author 13 months ago

Yeah, they're probably worth checking out, but for myself, I'm all about giving your body the building blocks it needs so that it can produce enough essential chemicals that it needs. Thanks very much for stopping by.

Hi Benji,

Dopamine is super important for the brain. We have tried Omega 3s , dha, ginko biloba.. We like the mix of Piracetam and Choline best. We supplement our diet with dopamine enhancing foods and take our mind supplements.

Great article - impressive number of HUBS!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks! Yeah, I like choline a lot as well. I've done a couple of articles on it. Really good supplement overall. It's too bad more people don't think about giving their brains more of what it needs. Thanks for stopping by!

Interesting article about dopamine but hey I have a question:

What do you think about people suffering from Schizofrenia, do you think they'll get better if they take dopamine supplements ?

Benjimester profile image

Benjimester Hub Author 7 months ago

You know, I really couldn't tell you. Schizophrenia is a pretty broad generalization that covers a range of psychological conditions. But it probably would at least help since schizophrenics seem to have a breakdown in elements of mental function, having trouble making sense of what is real. That's a really interesting question though. I wish I had the answer.

Can this supplement be taken during pregnancy? Also,it seems I have a very low deficiancy of dopamine do to antidepressants I took 6 years ago. I've had to get on Wellbutrin just so I can help myself find help in this area naturally. The Wellbutrin is working, so does that mean I do even produce dopamine still. No matter how much I excercised, ate right, lived healthy and so on nothing helped not even for the moment. Will this supplement help me you think?

Hey Phebe, L-Tyrosine is an all natural amino acid, so it's safe for just about everyone in every circumstance. I'm not all that familiar with Wellbutrin and how it works unfortunately.

If you exercised and ate right and still found that you had a dopamine deficiency, then it seems like there's something else going wrong. Usually people who eat healthy and stay physically fit don't run a big risk of dopamine deficiency. Let me do a little bit of research on Wellbutrin and see if I can't find out more.
