Best Digestive Enzymes

Because of the complexity of the human digestive system, it's sometimes to know what the best digestive enzymes are to take. Did you know that the body produces over 20 different digestive enzymes? That's quite a bit. Not only that, but there are multiple organs involved in producing digestive enzymes and juices, and possible causes of enzyme deficiency could be attributed to problems with one of the organs, like the gall bladder or the pancreas. So how do you know if you need a digestive enzyme, and what are the best digestive enzymes to take?

Fortunately, if you're experiencing an enzyme deficiency as the byproduct of organ impairment, there should be other symptoms involved that will help clue you in that there's a bigger problem going on. Chances are though, that if you're thinking that you might have a digestive enzyme deficiency, it's most likely due to the normal part of the aging process. As our bodies age they naturally begin to produce less digestive enzymes and other bodily chemicals such as growth hormones. Combine that with the poor nutritional foods found in the Standard American Diet, and you've got yourself an enzyme deficiency. But not to worry. It can be corrected.

Two of the Best Digestive Enzymes

There are two digestive enzymes which I would call the best digestive enzymes you can find.

1.  Raw Fruits and Vegetables

  • Bet you thought I was going to show you a fancy supplement.  Think again.  It's a very commonly known fact that the Standard American Diet that most of us eat is very lacking in healthy raw foods.  Many of the digestive enzymes our bodies use are found in fruits and vegetables, but because of the way food is often prepared, cooked, and processed, the helpful digestive substances are destroyed.  The very best thing you do for your digestive system is to eat more raw fruits and vegetables, and organic is preferred.

In the world of supplements, this is definitely one of the best digestive enzymes.

2. Source Naturals Essential Enzymes

  • This award winning broad spectrum blend of enzymes is about as good as anything else you'll find in the market of digestive enzymes, and Source Naturals is a name that is very respected. I don't like to take supplements from brands that I don't trust because the quality standards and "fillers" vary depending on the brand. In my opinion, this is the best digestive enzyme supplement out there that's still reasonably priced.  And it's vegetarian for those who were wondering.  I've provided a link to the product below.

Best Digestive Enzyme Supporting Habits

The more I research, the more I'm discovering that supporting your digestive system is one of the most important things you can do. When our digestive system begins to falter we run the risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies. There is growing research that suggests that many people in America unknowingly suffer from a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Having a deficiency can cause some major problems. Things like hair loss, premature aging, chronic fatigue, joint pain, and skin ailments can all be attributed to a vitamin or mineral deficiency. The modern diet is very poor, and the foods we eat have been shown to have less nutritional value than foods grown 50 years ago. Corporate farming methods use the bare minimum of tactics to grow their food, replenishing the soil each season only just enough to get their crops to grow again, but not enough to replenish the full spectrum of vitamins and minerals that plants can absorb. This is why it's so important to support the digestive system. Not only does our production of digestive enzymes decrease with age, the nutritional value of our common foods has decreased as well.

So here are a few habits that you can undertake to support your digestive system:

  • Eat more raw fruits and vegetables
  • Eat organic fruits and vegetables
  • Eat smaller slower meals
  • Exercise
  • Get enough amino acids

Digestive enzymes are specialized protein molecules. Because of that, you need to make sure you're getting enough of the 20 essential amino acids our bodies need in order to survive. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, after all. I've provided a link to a product that's my preferred way of getting enough amino acids in my diet. It's a liquid amino acid cooking sauce, and it tastes very much like soy sauce. It's made from soybeans so I guess it's no surprise. It's a great way of getting a broad range of amino acids into your diet.

I'm interested in what you said about eating raw vegetables to get enzymes. I looked into the raw diet but my Naturopath said I should probably avoid it because my digestion is still healing from 6 years of bulimia... I've also read comments from people with Chron's Disease and ulcerative colitis who literally have to cook their vegetables to mush in order to digest them... I'm a little curious as to the science behind your statement on that. Do you have to first build up the enzymes in your system with a supplement before you can digest the vegetables and fruits for their enzymes? Even when I cook vegetables from the cruciferous family, I can still get pretty disastrous bloating and gas. That to me is a sign of an allergy, or bad digestion.

Well, everybody's body is a little different, but from what I've read, that's exactly what happens. You really need to get your digestive system to a healthy level of digestion and enzymes before you can then fully utilize the enzymes present in fruit and vegetables. That's why I like taking a green powder. The green powder I take, Green Vibrance, has 25 billion cultures of probiotics per serving, plus a range of digestive enzymes. So you're not only boosting your digestion, you're giving your body complex plant material at the same time, hopefully spurring on the process further. I don't know if something like that could help people with Chron's. It might be too much. But for the normally impaired digestive system, it works wonders. Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Connie, for me, there have always been enough of the digestive enzymes in this particular brand. But every stomach is different. If you've tried it and it doesn't do enough for you, then you're smart to shop around a bit and see if you can find something stronger until you get your digestive system to a more efficient place and don't need the extra digestive support anymore. I've finally gotten my digestive system to peak efficiency. I don't take straight digestive enzymes anymore. I just get them in a green powder formula now, and I feel really great. I almost never have digestive problems. But it can be a long battle. To tell you the truth, I've never understood the % numbers either. I did the research for this article a number of years ago, and I've forgotten some of the specifics now unfortunately :( Sorry I haven't kept up to speed on the issue.
