The Artificial Fireplace

If it doesn't already have a real one, an artificial fireplace is a great idea for every home.  What good is a fireplace that doesn't work, you ask?  In every home there are artificial structures that do nothing but enhance the look of the home.  Things like crown molding, baseboards, and siding are perfect examples.  These do nothing to enhance the physical structure of the home, but do much to enhance the overall aesthetic beauty of the home.  In economic times such as these, anything a person can do to enhance the value of their home is a great idea indeed.  Artificial fireplaces, when set in the right areas, can greatly increase the aesthetic beauty of an interior space.  Just look at some of the pictures I've gathered below.  But not only that, even though artificial fireplaces aren't "real" in the sense that they burn wood or natural gas, that doesn't mean that they can't burn everything.  Read below to discover the fascinating new technology of ventless fireplaces and gel fuel.

Artificial Fireplace -- Ventless Fireplace

The terms artificial fireplace and ventless fireplace can be used synonymously. All artificial fireplaces are ventless anyway. But what most people don't realize about artificial fireplaces is that they can still be fully functional. There is a new technology of fuel out on the market that combines isopropyl alcohol with other chemicals to turn it into a gel that will burn for many hours. When burned, this gel is both odorless and safe for indoor environments meaning that it doesn't give off any harmful gases. Not only that, but gel fuel also contains tiny pockets of oil that cause the fire to actually crackle, making it almost identical to a regular fireplace.

Just imagine for a moment how amazing it would be to have a fully functional fireplace that's both cheap and requires almost no installation. In fact, some of the ventless fireplaces have been designed to be standalone, meaning they have no installation whatsoever. They're heavy enough that you can just sit them against the wall and they'll stay in place, giving off the impression that they're build into the wall, adding depth and intrigue to an interior space.

That's the reason why I love the idea of ventless artificial fireplaces. Nowhere else have I found as much bang for your buck. Depending on how ornate you want to be, they can be really cheap. Just take a look at some of the pictures to the right for a little bit of inspiration. I'm especially intrigued by the standalone fireplace with rocks. It's an interesting idea, but most homeowners probably don't have a large enough area in a room to put an artificial fireplace.  For more about ventless fireplaces and gel fuel, check out my site gel fuel tips.

Home Improvement -- Artificial Fireplace

We all know that remodeling can cost tens of thousands of dollars.  Sure you get a lot out of it, but who has that kind of money right now.  There are so many simple things you can do yourself to enhance the interior spaces of your home.  Even just repainting can bring back the shine and glow to your rooms.  Artificial fireplaces are my favorite easy-to-install additions to homes because when done right, they look like the real thing and are still fully functional.  The only thing they lack is the same volume of heat that gas or wood fireplaces give off.  But we all know that nothing beats bundling up next to a crackling fire on a cold rainy or snowy night.

I actually own the stone fireplace you show. I've had it for almost 2 years now. We love it. And since we have a townhouse the bedrooms are on the smaller side. The fire does heat up the bedroom we have it in. We still run the heat, but it is wonderful on chilly nights to have the added boost. They are beautiful as well. Thanks for some great information.

Nice article! I definitely agree that artificial fireplaces are excellent for interior design however I think that those looking to acquire one should be aware there are some that do not provide sufficient heating for a particular room, so I think more consideration and focus should also be placed on the amount of heat the fireplace can actually produce rather than simply how nice it looks in a room.

I agree, people need to know exactly what they're getting themselves into. If someone is buying an artificial fireplace expecting it to heat the room on a cold night, they're probably going to be disappointed. But, if you're like me, living in an area that barely dips below 50 degrees, then an artificial fireplace is perfect. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for posting this page, and the other page about making your own gel fuel. I really like the look of your stone fireplace -- is this something you put together? Can you tell me where you found the fireplace grate and the burner that fits so nicely under the fireplace? And do you need to worry about putting something under the fireplace to absorb the heat?

Thanks!

Thanks! It's definitely possible to build your own artificial fireplace. The one in stone would probably be the most difficult, but the person that built it basically just built a wooden frame and used stone tile on the surface. Depending on your level of tile and wood working ability, building your own stone artificial fireplace would be a really fun project. I can search for some plans online to see if anyone has drawn something up if you're interested.

The fireplace grate and log set I used came from Amazon. I left a link at the bottom. It fits nicely in artificial fireplaces or existing fireplaces that you want to have a conversion done. As far as putting something underneath the fireplace, you don't really need to worry about that because gel fuel doesn't generate much heat. It's pretty much purely just for the aesthetic value.
